Can Your Menstrual Cycle Affect Your Spray Tan?

Yes Your Menstrual Cycle Can Affect your Spray Tan! Because your skin changes throughout the month

Have you ever received your usual spray tan, used the same solution, followed the same rinse instructions and somehow ended up with a completely different result?

One week your tan is dark, smooth and beautiful.

Another week it develops lighter, fades faster or simply decides not to cooperate.

Annoying? Yes.

Unusual? Not necessarily.

Your menstrual cycle may be one of the many things affecting your skin and, therefore, your spray tan.

Your skin changes throughout the month

During the menstrual cycle, the levels of hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone rise and fall.

These hormonal changes can affect several things within the skin, including:

  • Hydration

  • Oil production

  • Sweating

  • Body and skin temperature

  • Blood flow

  • Sensitivity

  • The strength of the skin barrier

Spray tan develops within the outermost layer of the skin. This means the condition of your skin on the day of your appointment can influence how evenly the tan develops, how dark it becomes and how it fades.

The follicular phase

The follicular phase begins on the first day of your period and continues until ovulation.

During this phase, oestrogen gradually increases. Rising oestrogen may help the skin hold moisture and can support skin thickness, elasticity and its protective barrier.

For some women, the skin may feel smoother, more hydrated and more balanced as this phase progresses.

However, the actual days of menstruation can be different for everyone. Some women feel dry or sensitive, while others become oilier or notice no skin changes at all.

Because apparently our hormones enjoy keeping things interesting.

Ovulation

Ovulation generally happens around the middle of the cycle.

Oestrogen is usually higher around this time, and some women notice that their skin looks brighter, smoother or more hydrated.

This may help a spray tan apply and develop well—but it is not a guaranteed “perfect tanning day” for everyone.

Your preparation, medications, skincare, sweating, hydration, stress and general skin condition still matter.

The luteal phase

The luteal phase happens after ovulation and before the next period.

Progesterone becomes more dominant, and the skin may become warmer, oilier, sweatier or more sensitive. Some women may also experience dehydration or dry patches.

These changes could affect how the tan develops or wears.

For example, increased sweating may cause faster fading in certain areas, while dehydration may make the tan grab more strongly on dry patches.

Does your period always ruin your spray tan?

No.

Some clients notice a clear pattern around their cycle. Others see no difference whatsoever.

There is not enough evidence to say that every woman will tan better or worse during one particular phase. Skin, hormones and menstrual cycles are extremely individual.

We are all different, slightly crazy and hormonal—and our skin apparently likes to join the party.

Your cycle may influence your tan, but it is only one piece of the puzzle.

Other factors include:

  • Skin preparation

  • Exfoliation

  • Shaving or waxing

  • Moisturiser and skincare products

  • Medications

  • Hormonal contraception

  • Stress

  • Illness

  • Weather and humidity

  • Sweating

  • Rinse time

  • Aftercare and hydration

Let’s start tracking your results

Rather than guessing, I want to start looking for individual patterns.

The next time you visit Personal Tanner, let me know where you are in your cycle—especially if you noticed that your previous tan developed differently or faded faster than normal.

We can keep track of:

  • The date of your spray tan

  • The stage of your menstrual cycle

  • The solution used

  • Skin preparation

  • Whether we used a pH-balancing spray

  • Whether we applied Velvet Nectar hydration

  • How dark the tan developed

  • How evenly it faded

  • How many days it lasted

  • Any dryness, oiliness, sensitivity or extra sweating

And yes, I am genuinely creating a spreadsheet for this.

Hahahaha. We are becoming proper spray-tan scientists now.

Over time, this information may help us understand how your skin behaves throughout your cycle and find the best preparation, solution, hydration and appointment timing for you.

Your best tan is personal

I will never tell every client that one particular day is the “perfect” day to tan.

Bodies do not work like that.

What works beautifully for one woman may not work the same way for another. The most useful thing we can do is observe your skin, track your results and make small adjustments based on your individual experience.

So, next time your tan behaves differently, let’s talk about it.

It might be preparation. It might be hydration. It might be the weather. It might be your hormones having a little tantrum.

Whatever it is, we will investigate it together and work towards the best possible tan for your skin.
