Why Didn’t My Spray Tan Go as Dark?
“I did everything you told me, but my tan didn’t go as dark this time.”
I hear this so often. And I believe you! But when we start digging a little deeper, there is usually one small detail hiding in the story.
Sometimes it is Dove or another creamy body wash that can leave a barrier on the skin. Sometimes it is a product containing petroleum jelly, body oil or heavy moisturising ingredients. The skin may feel clean, but a residue can still stop the tanning solution from making even contact with it.
Other times, all the preparation was done immediately before the appointment.
The client exfoliated, shaved, washed their hair and had a hot shower—then jumped in the car and came straight to me. That might sound like excellent preparation, but it is all much better done the day before.
Shaving and exfoliating just before a spray tan can leave the skin unsettled. A recent shower can also leave product residue, moisture or heat on the skin. I recommend having your final shower at least four hours before your appointment and doing your full preparation the day before.
Then we have the client who has only just completed the first rinse, looks in the mirror and thinks:
“Where has my tan gone?”
Do not panic!
The bronzer you see immediately after your appointment is not your final colour. Most of it washes away during the first rinse, and your real tan continues developing underneath. Your colour will gradually return and often looks its best on Day 2.
So, before deciding that your tan did not develop, give it time.

The most common reasons a spray tan didn’t go dark
Body wash, conditioner, deodorant, moisturiser, oil, makeup or SPF created a barrier.
Exfoliating, shaving or showering happened too close to the appointment.
The tan was rinsed earlier than recommended.
The client is judging the colour immediately after the first rinse.
Sweat or water interfered with the tan while it was developing.
The skin was not exfoliated evenly before the appointment.
Hormones, medications, skin condition or individual skin chemistry affected the result.
"A spray tan didn’t go dark". It does not always mean the solution failed. Most of the time, we need to look at everything that touched the skin before, during and after the appointment.
After more than a decade of spray tanning, I have learned that the smallest forgotten detail is often the answer.
“My skin was completely clean” sometimes turns into:
“Oh…I did use my creamy body wash.”
“I didn’t shower before coming” sometimes becomes:
“Well, it was only about an hour before.”
And “the tan disappeared” sometimes means:
“I rinsed it ten minutes ago.”
Your spray-tan artist is not interrogating you—we are doing detective work! The more honestly you tell us, the easier it is for us to understand what happened and help you achieve a better result next time.
Prepare the day before, arrive with clean and completely product-free skin, follow your recommended rinse time and allow the colour to finish developing.
Your tan may not be missing. It might simply not be ready yet.
